Local Menehune Show Their Stuff At Shane Dorian’s Keiki Classic On The Big Island

As the 16th year of the Shane Dorian Keiki Classic on the Big Island rolled around, the atmosphere was epic as always. The waves were waist to chest high and perfect for the kids. The pros showed up in droves. And the whole community once again came together: Restaurants, Police, the Mayor, Water Patrol, surf shops; all donating their time and products in support of the event.

Created and still run by local hero and global legend Shane Dorian, the low-key, down-home style Keiki Classic raises food for charity and provides a free entry for all the local kids to participate in a prestigious competition that is fun for the whole family. The one day event is held annually in January, and is limited to the first 50 entries taken. The two age categories are U13 (for kids under thirteen) and U17 (kids from fourteen to seventeen.)

This year’s expression session which had Benji Weatherley, Kamalei Alexander, CJ Kanuha, Roy Powers, Torrey Meister, Moody, Freddy P, Lahiki, Keala Naihe, Damien Fahrenfort, and Ian Walsh was a stellar affair and the kids were amazed. Jamie Mosberg covered the event and got nice shots of the finals. Jason “Shibats” Shibata was there documenting and supporting as well.

“Our boy Kaunaloa Ng, won the prestigious menehune final and is the local favorite,” observed master coach Rainos Hayes. “Everyone loves him.” There is also a little tow headed 7-year old that made the final named Brodie Sale. “Very good for his age, like Seth Moniz was,” says Hayes. “He moves at the right speed.”

Shane rewarded the youngster with a round trip to the Mainland for this coming summer thru Monster Energy, a generous present for a kid barely in elementary school.

“Brodie is not frightened by much for such a youngster,” noted Shane. “Banyans is kinda nuts when it is 5 feet and Brodie was out there happy to be part of it all.”

Shane has become one of the most respected all-round surfers in history and the Keiki Classic is testimony to the quality of his talent and the generosity of his character. Congrats Mr Dorian for a job well done!
