Surfer Derrick Mirikitani was rescued by lifeguards yesterday at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu after being found floating lifelessly near the inside. According to a post on veteran North Shore lifeguard Abe Lerner’s Facebook account, the man had drown, “Due to a quick response, early CPR, and defibrillation a drowned surfer at the bay today has a chance of life. Hope he makes a full recovery!”

A fellow surfer spotted his board and when he came upon it found Mirikitani still attached to the leash yet underwater. The surf was in the 12-15+ foot range, which may not sound huge for Waimea Bay standards, but it serves as a sobering reminder that things can go wrong really quick in any waves of consequence.

Props to the North Shore Lifeguards and we wish Mr. Mirikiitani a thorough and speedy recovery.
