10 in ’10 for Slater is now that much closer. Get used to that because we’re most likely going to be hearing it and seeing it on Quiksilver shirts everywhere for years and years to come. That is unless Jordy can pull off something of epic proportions to win his first and halt Kelly’s tenth.

Jordy did what he had to do in this event though: make it as far as Kelly to keep this thing alive—bettering Kelly would have been the ideal finish for Jordy though. Tens of thousands of Portugal’s surf fans amassed the sand to watch the final go down today—they love their surfing. The dropping tide created shallow, sucky lefts in the final, which suited Kelly’s surfing much better because of the necessity for those rapid, projecting backhand snaps and floaters to connect to the open sections. Jordy did land a backside frogleap (fake superman) and finish off with two decent snaps, giving him the highest wave of the heat at a 7.10. But Kelly’s back-up bettered Jordy’s by a full two points.

Slater is locked and focused on number 10 right now. He could wrap it up in Puerto Rico if Jordy gets anything less than a 5th (or if Kelly gets a 3rd or better)—and today’s victory by Kelly knocked Mick out of the equation, so it’s all on the South African’s shoulders. We’ll have a full rundown of World Title possibilities in the upcoming days, but for now, let us reflect on just how good the inauguration of Portugal’s event to the permanency of the tour actually was. And with the two finalists being the two going head-to-head for the title, what more of a finish could you have wanted?—Ryan Brower

Here are the ASP World Title race scenarios straight from ASP World Tour Manager Renato Hickel:

“If Kelly gets a 3rd or better In Puerto Rico, he clinches the title; Kelly gets a 5th/9th, Jordy needs a 1st; Kelly gets 13th/25th, Jordy needs a 3rd; We can also say that if Jordy gets a 5th or worse, Kelly is the Champion—even with a 25th.”
