We meet Jamie for drinks at the Shorebreak Hotel in Huntington before the movie. The second story outdoor seating provides a stark contrast from what this place was like in August for the US Open. But for some reason it seems like all the people we partied with then are here for the world premier of Who Is J.O.B.?
Jamie starts things off right by going with a drink that was concoted one of those blurry US Open nights, a border patrol (a double margarita with a shot of Petron and cholula). He grins and says that’ll help with the butterflies. We chat, eat, and drink while awaiting the infamous Red Bull double-decker party bus. We see it turn the corner and I feel like I’m back at the US Open all over again. We get on and head to the Lido Theater, and of course the bus is stocked with all the RBVs (Red Bull and vodkas) and Coors Light you could ask for.
We get to the Lido and it’s packed, like ridiculously packed. The anticipation for the movie is palpable. Stoke resonates through the air. We find seats and the lights go dark. It opens with Jamie himself dressed in that Balinese hat, white shirt, slacks, and black tie riding a bicycle and jabbering random things that have been said about him over the years. He crashes the bike straight into a wall and Red Bull goes flying, and then we are catapulted into giant pits, giant airs, and giant turns.
The movie is endless world class action, except for the interviews throughout with Jamie, his dad, Bruce Irons, Kelly Slater, and more. We find out things about Jamie that not many people know: his mom was never really there, he rode the shortbus to school, he had to wear a helmet ducttaped to his head in the water.
The soundtrack mixes the heavy, consequential surf throughout. Jamie does things that no other surfer can—pulling in goofy into a 15-footer-that-most-wouldn’t-pull-into-at-all and coming out regular is his trademark. And yes, we do find out along the way that burning question that is the title of this incredible flick: Who is J.O.B.? The answer is this: J.O.B. is the world’s best surfer on his own program, and not anyone else’s. And if you question me on that I say just go see the movie and your mind will be changed.—Ryan Brower
