WAIKIKI, HI – The 9th annual Duke’s OceanFest got underway at Kuhio Beach today, kicking off four days of competition that includes 10 ocean sport events and 900 athletes from around the Pacific, all in celebration of Hawaii’s ultimate waterman: Duke Kahanamoku. While there is a swag of prize money and prestigious titles on the line, all 900 athletes participating this week will tell you that the true lure of OceanFest is to surf in honor of Duke and enjoy the same ocean playground where he grew up popularizing all of the ocean sports featured this week, and sharing his aloha with the world.

Hitting the shoulder-high south shore surf today were three of the 10 competitions:
-The Kicker Audio Presents: Toes on the Nose Rabbit Kekai Classic (men’s longboard)
-The Gidget Pro Longboard (women)
-The Cabana’s Pool Bar & Nashville Waikiki Tandem Surfing Championship

It was a successful day for defending event champions from Hawaii with longboard surfers Kelia Moniz, Kai Sallas, and tandem partners Chuck Innam and Tiffany Rabalac, who all forged their way through to the business end of the deal with the finals to be decided tomorrow.

Former world #2 ranked shortboard surfer Megan Abubo (Haleiwa) couldn’t resist the opportunity to return to her childhood surf break of Waikiki today, taking up a longboard to participate in the Gidget Pro. She will also be competing in the C4 Waterman Surf SUP stand-up paddle race tomorrow.

“I grew up in Waikiki ‘til I was 14,” said Abubo, now 32. “To come back to Waikiki really makes me feel like a kid again. The Waikiki beachboys taught me how to surf so it makes me feels like I’m paying back respect to them.

“Surfing in memory of Duke Kahanamoku is so special because he took surfing to so many different shores. He basically spread surfing and the Aloha spirit. I can’t name a single surfer from Hawaii who doesn’t look up to Duke. Everything he embodied is what we should all aspire to.”

Coming up tomorrow will be the AccesSurf Challenged Athlete Surfing and the C4 Waterman Surf SUP Race, as well as the final heats of the men’s and women’s longboard and the tandem surfing.

Duke’s OceanFest is a benefit for the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation’s (ODKF) college scholarships and athletic grants program that supports outstanding Hawaii scholar-athletes competing in water sports and volleyball. An auction of a one-of-a-kind Duke Kahanamoku longboard by Maui Longboards, as well as online and beach sales of commemorative 2010 Duke’s OceanFest t-shirts will go towards the ODKF college program.
