Billabong Announces All Girls Surf Contest in Puerto Rico
Billabong is pleased to announce “Un Dia de Surfing con Liza,” an all-women’s surf contest held at Playa Lobos, Puerto Rico on August 14th. Led by Billabong team rider Liza Caban, the event is fashioned solely for women and will be the first girls-only surf competition in Puerto Rico’s history. According to Billabong’s Liza Caban, the event’s ambassador, “the contest is as much about a bit of healthy competition as it is about spreading the joys of surfing to the women of Puerto Rico.”
“I think this event is going to be really good for female surfing in Puerto Rico,” said Caban. “I’m really hoping that this unique event will really help promote female surfing on the island.”
Open to all girls willing to put on a jersey, the contest is free to the public and appeals to women of any skill level. “We’ve fashioned this event so that every girl—no matter their ability—could be a part of it,” added Julie Gonzalez, Billabong Puerto Rico sales rep and event organizer. “Even if they don’t have a board…we will have something for them that they can use at the contest site.”
As a growing sport in Puerto Rico, the past decade has seen a steady drip of women take to the waters and embrace surfing. Gonzalez sees the event as a spark that could lead to an explosion of female surfers in Puerto Rico.
“The event will motivate and inspire girls to keep working hard to become better athletes so they can continue to live a healthy lifestyle through surfing,” said Gonzalez. “We’ve made it so that every girl, no matter the ability or the skill level, could be a part of it.”
