The south swells are pumping, and the hungriest up-and-coming and big-wave surfers alike are currently making their way to the Mexican Pipeline for what’s sure to be an impressive show.

An ASP 4-star event, the Quiksilver Pro is one of the only events in the world to bring such a wide range of surfing talent to one place.

Defending champ Clay Marzo (Lahaina, HAW), 20, was forced to withdraw from this year’s event due to a knee injury, leaving the door open for the rest of the field.

Maybe it’ll be Hawaiian hellman Mark Healey, or Chilean lunatic Ramon Navarro? How about Southern California prodigy Kolohe Andino or Peruvian wonder-kid Cristobal De Col? Or perhaps one of the other freakishly talented Latinos making the trip north will bring keep the title on their turf (Angelo Lozano or Gabriel Villaran, anyone?).

“I’m bummed that I won’t be able to make it down to Puerto to defend my title in the Quiksilver contest,” Marzo said. “I’ve been out of the water for almost two months and my knee is still not 100 percent. Puerto is a heavy wave and it isn’t smart to go down there any less than being totally ready for it. I’m focused on getting the knee healthy and psyched to get back to Puerto Escondido in 2011.”

Angelo Lozano (Puerto Escondido, MEX), 23, who is the highest rated Mexican surfer on the ASP One World Ranking and a local standout at Playa Zicatela, won an ASP 2-Star rated event at his local break in 2008 and took third place at last year’s Quiksilver Pro, making him one to watch at this year’s event. Despite Puerto’s mysterious persona, the local Mexican hopes that his familiarity with the infamous wave will help him achieve another impressive result.

“I think it does help knowing the wave some, although it still remains a mystery to me,” Lozano said. “Puerto is an unpredictable wave. There are surfers out there like Clay (Marzo) that learn the flow of it faster than others and those are the dangerous competitors out there.”
