The Surf Ride $100,000 Freedom Pro-Am Surf Series by VANS wrapped up it’s inaugural season this past weekend at the Oceanside Pier in Southern California.
The 4 event series, designed to bring top pros and amateurs together at a single event, while benefiting a good cause did not disappoint.
“California has a rich history of stellar surfing and the Surf Ride series is our way to support the many local and international pros who call the Golden State home,” shared Surf Ride event director Chris Williams.
Williams added, “Having the groms, and other family divisions allowed the amateur competitors a front row look at where many of them are aspiring to take their surfing. The prize money, ASP judges and all the other details made it an amazing series and we look forward to this series gaining momentum in the years to come.”
Micah Byrne (Huntington Beach) took home a $10,000 bonus check plus a $5,000 Kicker car audio system as the Pro Division series winner.
This weekends Pro Division finals saw a rampaging Masatoshi Ohno (Japan) capture first place as he destroyed the head high peaks on offer throughout the event. Previous Surf Ride Pro-Am runner up Austin Ware unleashed his razor sharp surfing in the finals to take home second, followed by formwer WCT surfer Nathaniel Curran (Ventura) and series champ Micah Byrne in third and fourth places, respectively. For the full results, head to surfride.com/content.asp?itemid=77.
The Pros weren’t the only folks feeling the love at the Surf Ride event, as there was over $10,000 on the line for the regions top Amateurs competitors too.
Partial proceeds were also presented to the Camp Pendleton Kids afterschool surf club, where military children enjoy a afterschool surf program and Bible study throughout the school year.
Huge thanks to VANS for pulling out all the stops this season, including a delicious carne asada lunch for all participants and families at each event.
