Andrew Doheny loves Lowers. It’s one of his favorite waves. Fitting how his first Pro Junior victory occurred there on Saturday.

He knows it’s ins and outs, he knows what waves to catch and which ones to let go. His casual yet punchy style suits the wave well. Mix in his buttery, wrapping carves and what he earned was 17.10 points to bring down Nat Young (15.40), Dylan Goodale (14.17), and Tyler Newton (13.60). A high-scoring, see-sawing final it was. Goodale, a 2-star victory to his name, leading with big, easy-going airs. Newton challenging Doheny for the smoothest frontside carve. Nat Young, a 4-star victory to his name, leading with a big layback and an unmatched backside vertical attack.

But in the end it was Droid mustering the two mid-8s it took to earn the Oakley Pro Junior at Lower Trestles. When I congratulated him he seemed like a kid in candy store, happy as can be. Surely tonight’s celebration in Newport Beach will be a good one for Droid and friends. Expect more victories (and victory parties) to come from Andrew.—Ryan Brower
