The surfing world lost a great one yesterday at Playa Zicatela in Puerto Escondido, Mexico. I first met Noel in the late 90s when we both would post up in Puerto Escondido for months on end, surfing the treacherous barrels by day and chasing European girls at night. His surfing was a big inspiration to me, the dude charged and taught me a lot about surfing big waves. Not only an excellent surfer, Noel was a gem of a human, and never hesitated to help someone in need. I’m in Indonesia right now and don’t really know the details of his passing but from what I hear, the waves were in the six-foot range and Noel took went right on a good one, wiped out, and never surfaced. I’m guessing his board hit him in the head, it seems highly unlikely to me he would drown in waves that were small for Noel’s standards. Whatever the cause, Noel and his humanitarian efforts (he recently traveled to Chile to help out after the earthquake) will be greatly missed and we pass our respects, thoughts, and prayers to Noel’s family and friends. See you in the big barrel in the sky brother…—JC
