SAN CLEMENTE, California (Monday, May 3, 2010) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME 6.0 Lowers Pro is set to start tomorrow, May 4, 2010 at the iconic cobblestone pointbreak of Lower Trestles. The event will host a mass of ASP World Title surfers as well as the world’s finest up-and-comers as they battle for the heap of ratings points on offer to solidify themselves amongst the global elite.

Running in conjunction with the 6.0 Lowers Pro will be stop No. 3 on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series, the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior, which will host the nation’s finest ASP Pro Junior talent who are all out to finish within the top of their regional ratings to qualify for the inaugural ASP World Junior Tour.

Brett Simpson (Huntington Beach, CA), 25, is currently amidst his rookie year on the ASP Dream Tour, and is hungry to capitalize on the increasingly-important ratings points on offer at the upcoming ASP PRIME event now that the One World Rating is in full swing.

“I think the draw for this event shows how much are sport has grown in less than a year,” Simpson said. “These primes are top notch events and everyone that enters them are going for the big points and getting a chance to surf against the best in the world! I’d say there’s a little different approach in the first few rounds but once it turns man-on-man in this event its going to be a World Title lineup and somebody is going to be walking away with a massive win.”

The Huntington Beach native is also looking forward to the comfort of competing in a premier event so close to home.

“The goal is to always capitalize on home court,” Simpson said. “I had a big win at the U.S. Open last year and that will always me in my memory bank! Though I’ve never really had a great result out here a Lowers, there’s never been a better time and I feel really comfortable out there (at Lowers). Plus I feel this wave suits my surfing well and you have to utilize that.”

Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), 18, who is the defending ASP North America Pro Junior Series Champion, had a successful run at last year’s 6.0 Lowers Pro and is hoping he can capitalize on his familiarity of Lower Trestles to add an additional result to his string of keeper scores for 2010.

“Last year went well for me at Lowers,” Young said. “I feel really comfortable out there since I have been surfing contests at Lowers since I was little and it is sort of similar to some of the waves I surf at home. I’m really excited for this contest and know it’s going be really hard, but hopefully I can make some heats against some of the top guys.”

In addition to the 6.0 Lowers Pro competition, Young will also be leading the field of talent into this year’s ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior. Although the talented goofy-footer has missed the first two events on the regional ASP Pro Junior Series due to his commitment to the ASP PRIME and Star series this year, Young is still hungry to post a solid result at this year’s Oakley Pro Junior.

“Defending my title as North America Junior Champ would be nice, but I have already missed two juniors,” Young said. “There are still five more juniors, so it’s still possible. As far as Lowrs goes, the more heats you surf out there the more comfortable you start feeling, and its Lowers with only four guys out, so what more could you ask for.”

Top seeds in this year’s ASP PRIME 6.0 Lowers Pro include former three-time ASP World Champion Andy Irons (Hanalei, HI), 31, California wunderkind Dane Reynolds (Ventura, CA), 24, defending 6.0 Lowers Pro Champion Fred Patacchia (North Shore, HI), 28, and rookie talent Owen Wright (AUS), 20, amongst others.

The 6.0 Lowers Pro and Oakley Pro Junior will run from May 4 through 8, 2010 and will be webcast LIVE via nike6lowerspro.com.
