Round 1 Of Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic To Start At 10am, Oakley Trials At 8.30

DEE WHY, Sydney/Australia (Wednesday 21st April, 2010) – Professional surfing returns to Sydney’s Northern Beaches today, with event No.4 on the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic to get underway at 10am this morning.

With less than ideal 1-2ft (0.5m) beach break conditions on offer at the host venue of Dee Why, contest organisers have opted to relocate the opening round of competition to more favourable conditions at nearby Curl Curl.

“We’ve been accessing the forecast and small surf is on the cards for the next few days, so we’ve decided to push through with the opening round,” said seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion and event contest director Layne Beachley.

When competition starts, the opening heat of Round 1 will see world no.3 Chelsea Hedges (Aus), 26, face off with world no.6 Carissa Moore (Haw), 17, and world no.14 Amee Donohoe (Aus), 29.

Three-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (Aus), 22, will battle Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS), 23, and the event wildcard in heat three of Round 1.

The ASP Top 17 will be joined by the winner of the Oakley Wildcard Trials, which will start at 8.30am this morning. The trials will feature defending ASP Women’s World Junior champion Laura Enever (Aus) and ISA World Junior champion Tyler Wright (Aus).

The Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic will run from April 21 through 26, 2010 and will be webcast LIVE via www.beachleyclassic.com
