Dane Reynolds Talks About The Session That Changed His Lips Forever
“This shot was taken after the event ended on the Gold Coast. I was staying around for a few more days to see a concert in Brisbane. I hadn’t been surfing very much because of the crowds and bad surf, but the winds turned and the swell picked up. Somehow the stars aligned and we had this special session at South Stradbroke Island,” he said from Australia where he’s preparing for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.
“We picked a peak down the beach from the crowd and it sucked at first, but something changed with the tide or Venus and Uranus quit fighting—I don’t even know, but suddenly we were faced with six-foot peaks and zero crowds. Kelly was on a 5’6” taking off 25-percent later and deeper than what I’d consider possible. He was getting really beat up, but it was some of the coolest surfing I’ve ever seen. Craig Anderson was sitting Indian style in gaping tubes. I got the worst sunburn of my life. My eyes were reduced to small sunken raisins and my lips will still be recovering when I’m 50.”—Dane Reynolds.
