Mick Fanning (Aus) 28, has reached the pinnacle of Professional Surfing by winning his 2nd ASP World Championship Title in 3 years! Mick finished the 2009 ASP World Tour season with 3 x event wins, 1 x 3rd, 2 x 5th places and 2 x 9th place finishings.
The 2009 ASP World Tour had a few surprises in terms of prize money boosts like the 2009 Hurley Pro at Trestles in which Mick as awarded a record $110,000 first prize check! Fanning continued his good fortune with a back to back win at the Quiksilver Pro in France. Then 2 events later winning his main sponsors event the Rip Curl Pro Search in Portugal. These 3 victories were enough to put Mick in the lead of the 2009 ASP World Tour ratings coming into Hawaii.
Mick also dubbed at “White Lightning” was just that as he struck back at his childhood mate Joel Parkinson as the final event unfolded at the Billabong Pipeline Masters in Hawaii. With perfect 6-8 foot Pipeline and Backdoor barrels reeling in the stage was set for one of the most dramatic World Title showdown’s in years!
With a two heat lead over Parko, Mick was focused on reaching the Semifinals in an effort to becoming the 2009 Champ. Micktory struck sooner than expected when Parko was dealt a Round 3 defeat from event wild card Gavin Gillette.
To make this World Title even sweeter than the last, Fanning was awarded a bonus of $50,000 from the Van’s Triple Threat and ultimately to win the 2009 ASP World Championship Title at the Banzai Pipeline!!!
Kekoa Bacalso (Hi) 24, also reached the pinnacle of his Professional Surfing career by winning the 2009 ASP World Tour “Rookie of the Year” award! Kekoa finished up number 18 in the World on his maiden season on the World Tour.
Kekoa’s standout performances at The Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, Australia really opened the eyes of his competitors and spectators alike that this kid is the real deal. “BAM” or “Tank” as he is know to his friends literally exploded lips and smashed any section that got in his way this year.
In addition to Mick and Kekoa’s success, another big congrats goes out to Alana Blanchard (Hi) 19 for winning the first jewel of the ASP Women’s Triple Crown the Van’s Women’s Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa. Joel Centeio (Hi) 26 made his own dreams come true when he took out the first jewel of the ASP Men’s Triple Crown the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa. Both Blanchard’s and Centeio’s stellar performances had the beach on their feet in applaud of their achievements.
