Lee-Ann Curren Officially Qualifies for the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour
CAPBRETON, France (Thursday, December 10, 2009) – Lee-Ann Curren (Anglet, FRA), 20, has officially qualified for the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour and becomes the third French and European surfer ever to enter women’s surfing elite, following Marie-Pierre Abgral (Hossegor, FRA) in 2002 and Caroline Sarran (Capbreton, FRA) in 2007.
With the final event of this year’s ASP Women’s World Tour wrapping-up in exceptional surf yesterday, the official list of elite members was officially released naming Curren in No. 14 as a member of next year’s full-time touring contingent.
Curren, who had to wait until the end of the Gidget Pro Sunset Beach to get the confirmation of her 2010 elite inception, will compete against the world’s best female surfers in 2010 including reigning three-time ASP Women’s World Champion and freshly crowned 2009 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore (Gold Coast, AUS).
For her second year only on the ASP Women’s World Qualifying Series (WQS) in 2009, Curren showed how strong her surfing was, the smart regular-foot athlete slowly rising to the ratings’ top and finishing her year-off with a solid Semifinal berth in Brazil, the result that rocketed her into next year’s elite.
Coming from a successful regional career where she claimed both the ASP European Women’s Junior and ASP European Women’s WQS titles, it was time for the 20-year-old French woman to get a chance amongst the world’s best and represent Europe against surfing’s dominating nations Australia, Brazil, Hawaii and South Africa.
Considered a leader of women’s surfing in Europe, Curren will now fly the flags for France and Europe across the world at every stop of the ASP Women’s World Tour. Renowned for her big-wave abilities, her smooth temper and smart competitive approach, Curren will be one rookie to keep an eye on when she gets her 2010 campaign underway at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast in Australia next year. From solid tube riding to wedgy beachbreaks, Curren has the skills to cause upsets in any surf conditions, and mark the women’s tour with her relaxed lifestyle. Congratulations for making it to the top, and good luck for your rookie season on the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour.
