It’s something we here at TransWorld SURF knew was only a matter of time—Dusty Payne qualifying for the ASP World Tour. The Maui bred crusty is at the forefront of the talent pool that Maui has become. Clay Marzo, Kai Barger, Granger Larsen, et. al.
After almost winning the 2008 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, Dusty went into this year’s final WQS event—the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach—sitting at 18th. The soon-to-be 21-year-old powered himself all the way to the final, taking home a fourth, and pushing himself up to 9th in the ratings—qualifying and then some. Dusty is definitely a rookie that can bring some heat next year, and he’ll surely be shaking things up. The kid has been dreaming of this since he was 12. Congrats Dusty!
Look for Dusty’s long-awaited Pro Spotlight in the upcoming Am Issue of TransWorld SURF (hits newsstands 1/12/2010).
