Vans Triple Crown Of Surfing Set To Award 1 Million Dollar Prize Purse

Vans announced today that the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing has added the TRIPLE CROWN – TRIPLE THREAT bonus purse, upping the entire ante for the whole Triple Crown (3 men’s events, 3 women’s events) to a cool 1,000,000 dollars. Seems that ever since Bob Hurley raised the stakes at the 2008 Lowers event prize purses have been getting heftier and heftier. And rightfully so. The TRIPLE CROWN – TRIPLE THREAT will consist of awarding $50Gs to the Men’s Triple Crown winner, an extra $50Gs for the Pipe Masters winner, a $50Gs bonus for the ASP Men’s World Champ, and a $25Gs bonus to the Women’s Triple Crown Champ.

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is one of the most sought after series titles in all of surfing, as it is always centered around some of the greatest surf breaks in the world (Pipeline, Sunset Beach, Haleiwa). Last year saw some epic conditions for all the events and tons of history was made (Carissa Moore winning the women’s Haleiwa event, Steph Gilmore snagging a Triple Crown, Parko scoring a perfect heat in the Billabong Pipeline Masters en route to his first Triple Crown title, etc.).

With a heated ASP World Title race set to unfold at the Billabong Pipeline Masters, all this extra pocket change is sure to add to the excitement and intensity on the North Shore this year. Stay tuned to transworldsurf.com for much more on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, as things kick off this Thursday, November 12th at the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa.

North Shore, Oahu, HI (Monday, Nov. 9, 2009) – The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing presented by Rockstar Energy Drink makes history today, announcing the TRIPLE CROWN – TRIPLE THREAT bonus purse that makes this prestigious Hawaiian series the first $1,000,000 stop on the Association of Surfing Professionals Dream Tour. More than 150 surfers from 17 nations have a crack at the loot as the series kicks off this Thursday, November 12, at Haleiwa on Oahu’s North Shore.

Vans is very proud to announce that the TRIPLE CROWN – TRIPLE THREAT will award $50,000 to the men’s Triple Crown series champion, an extra $50,000 for the Billabong Pipeline Masters winner, a $50,000 bonus to the ASP’s men’s world champion, and a $25,000 bonus to the women’s Triple Crown champion. “2009 has been an incredible year for pro surfing and this Hawaii showdown will be a fitting finale,” said Doug Palladini, Vice President of Marketing at Vans.

“Vans has a 43-year history of giving back to action sports and I can think of no better way to carry on that tradition than with the Triple Threat bonus purse. On behalf of all the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing staff, our event partners Billabong, Reef, O’Neill, Gidget and the ASP, we are proud to share our aloha with the talented surfers who have made the Vans Triple Crown what it is today.”
