Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California (November 9, 2009) – Sofia Mulanovich brought Peru to its feet with her win at the fifth Championship Tour (WCT) stop, the Movistar Peru Classic presented by Rip Curl. The points from this victory bring the 26-year-old into the top three in the world rankings, within striking distance of another championship crown as the women head to Hawaii.

Having eluded her for the last two years, the win in Playa Lobitos’ left point break had Mulanovich and the beaches of Peru overjoyed. “I wanted to win this tour stop more than anything,” says Mulanovich. “To win in Peru, in front of my people who have supported me means everything, it is a dream come true. Now I’m focused on holding tight to this momentum heading into the last two events in Hawaii.”

In playful waist-to-chest high surf, Mulanovich topped Stephanie Gilmore in the final hard-fought heat. With cutbacks done in her characteristically smooth style on her backhand, Mulanovich pulled together an impressive 7.67 wave score in the last minute of the heat totaling her score to 15.00 in lieu of Gilmore’s 14.74.  The nail biting final brought hundreds of fans to the water’s edge, where they swarmed their hometown heroine as she emerged victorious.

Between WCT events and training, Mulanovich has donated her time to Red Bull’s “Under my Wing” workshop, mentoring 30 young surfers, 15 to 18 years old chosen from schools throughout Lima.  Sofia presented tools to assist and inspire these young adults to achieve their goals in and out of surfing.

Mulanovich will travel to the North Shore of Hawaii this week to train for the next stop on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, the Gidget Pro at Sunset Beach, Hawaii.
