The Return Of TearDevils

Thursday night saw the return of the cult classic TearDevils trilogy at the La Paloma Theater in Encinitas, California. Created by Jesse Schluntz when he lived in a cramped, one-bedroom studio with me and my brother and whoever else needed a place to crash, TearDevils won best comedy award at the Surfer Poll Awards two years in a row.

With the best of the three videos meshed into one, “The Best Of TearDevils” highlights the pre-Jackass shenanigans and ripping that were often imitated but never duplicated. From projectile vomiting to a sniper clearing the lineup from a cliff, all of the favorite skits are included in the Best Of DVD as well as some really good surfing from the likes of Doug Silva, Seth Elmer, Rob Machado, and a slew of not-so-well-known San Diego area surfers, including yours truly and lil’ bro Chris.

Obviously I’m biased, but between the bros from Thieves And Liars jamming on stage and the blast from the past surfing, Thursday was a special night for those who were around in the TearDevils era. Even those who weren’t around and hadn’t seen TearDevils (like my girlfriend who walked into the show during the milk barf scene) were laughing hysterically. Well done, Captain Carrot!
