PacSun USA Surf Team Extends Its Lead Toward A Gold Medal Finish Moving Into The Final Day Of Competition

PacSun USA Surf Team in Costa Rica – EPISODE 8

USA drives hard toward the finals with five surfers still in the competition; France currently sitting in second place

Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica – August 8, 2009 – The waves picked up considerably and the crowd swelled as the 2009 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games ran its second to last day of competition yesterday. The field narrowed considerably through a flurry of rounds and several top name athletes were eliminated from the contest.

The overall point rankings shuffled, while the USA’s lead strengthened. The PacSun USA Surf Team lost Austin Ware and Steve Newton in the battle-but Ben Bourgeois, Cory Lopez, Sage Erickson, Courtney Conlogue, and Tony Silvagni all remain in the event and are headed into today’s final rounds of competition.

“It’s not over yet, but we’re close” said USA head coach Ian Cairns. “We just need to finish our job today.”

The current top five nations are:

1st – United States – 17190 points
2nd – France – 14440 points
3rd – Hawaii – 13358 points
4th – South Africa – 12506 points
