Reigning Champs, O’Neill Surf Shop, Out To Earn A Third Regional Win

San Juan Capistrano, CA (July 27, 2009) – Returning to Santa Cruz for the fourth stop of the Oakley Surf Shop Challenge fueled by Muscle Milk. After a brief two-year stint at Pleasure Point, the contest is on the move and will kick off this year just up the Santa Cruz coastline at the famed Steamer Lane on Friday, July 31, 2009.

One of the more competitive stops in the series, the Central/Northwest not only draws one of the largest shop pools, but some heavy-hitting veterans as well. Some notable participants who have competed in the past include Peter Mel, Tom Curren, Teddy Navarro, Nathaniel Curran, Nick Rozsa, and Chris Brown.

The O’Neill Surf Shop alone has been a dominating force in the region with back-to-back regional wins. As the reigning champs, they are wound and ready to keep the winning streak alive. Joining, the trifecta of victors-Jason “Ratboy” Collins, Kieran Horn, and Jesse Colombo-is underground ripper Brad Fox. He surfed with the team in the 2008 Finals, but this will be his first Regional appearance.

One Way Boardshop has found themselves in the ever-looming shadow of the O’Neill team two years in a row. This year they are back and determined to step out into the limelight. Other teams to watch include Channel Islands Surf Shop from Santa Barbara and 2004 National and 2006 Regional Champions Camarillo’s Revolution Surf Company.

All of the competitors are hoping to do their part to secure their team a spot in the Huntington Beach Finals, but that won’t be the only prize they’re striving for. Each surfer also has the opportunity to seize some individual glory with the FCS award for Functional Creative Surfing by out-performing the other competitors. The winner of this award earns $1000 worth of travel gear for their team compliments of FCS and Gorilla Grip.
