You’ve been waiting a whole year, and it’s finally here again. The 2009 Cali Rally kicked off today in Del Mar at a local secret spot – 15th street. Team Reef showed up late, and were automatically docked 50 points for the tardiness. The reason? Team Manager Heath “Nutty” Walker “wanted some burritos mate.” At least Aussie hellman Paul Fisher made up for the mistake by snagging a chick within the first five minutes of the start of the Cali Rally. He picked up a girl in the lineup and proceeded to surf the entire contest with her on her longboard, eventually nailing a tandem ride. Look out for Paul Fisher ladies, that’s only one of many to come in the next ten days.
Amidst the tackling, snaking, and donuts in the shoes, Billabong’s Dane Zaun managed to catch the best waves of the day and earn the victory and 1,000 points for team Billabong. We’ve now unleashed all four teams in San Diego county to start checking off challenges, so be aware of chaos coming your way if you’re in the area. Tonight team Billabong has their Hooters Wing Challenge in Pacific Beach. Stop by and check it out if you’re around.
Stay tuned for video highlights, daily blogs from each team, and total carnage from the 2009 TransWorld SURF Cali Rally. Keep an eye on calirally.transworld.net for all the latest chaos. -Ryan Brower
