3X World Champ Andy Irons Joins FUEL TV’s Drive Thru

Network picks up series for sixth season – heading Down Under. Surf stars include regulars Pat O’Connell, Benji Weatherly, Donavon Frankenreiter, 1999 World Champ Mark “Occy” Occhilupo, and Big Wave Legend Shane Dorian.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – FUEL TV, the only 24/7 action sports lifestyle network, is pleased to announce that it has green lit season six of the popular “Drive Thru” surf adventure series and has added three-time ASP World Surf Champion Andy Irons to the cast. The filming will begin in April as the crew attempts to “Drive Thru” both the East and West Coasts of Australia in search of the best waves.

Hawaiian Andy Irons will be joined by “Drive Thru” series regulars Pat O’Connell (star of “Endless Summer II”), Benji Weatherley (former top World Tour competitor) and free surfer/recording artist Donavon Frankenreiter. Also returning will be 1999 ASP World Champ Mark “Occy” Occhilupo, who made his “Drive Thru” debut last season for “Drive Thru: New Zealand.” Hawaiian big-wave charger and former World Tour standout Shane Dorian rejoins the “Drive Thru” cast after six years.

The “Drive Thru” series is produced by 14 Day Productions for FUEL TV and is based around a two-week trip to a specific surf region with a small group of pro surfers. Past “Drive Thru” seasons have traveled to South Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, South and Central America and New Zealand.

“I’m really looking forward to this season of ‘Drive Thru’,” says Producer Greg Browning. “It will be the first time we have been to Western Australia so I’m hoping we find some crazy waves for this talented cast to show off what they can do.”

“I’m really stoked to be joining the ‘Drive Thru’ cast on this trip to Australia,” says Andy Irons. “I pretty much have my TV set to FUEL TV when I’m home, and the ‘Drive Thru’s’ always looked like so much fun. It’s just one of the many things I’ve really wanted to do but couldn’t while traveling around the world on tour. I’m psyched to be taking advantage of my time off the tour and finally getting a chance to cram a few years worth of fun into two weeks down in Oz.”

“I can’t believe we’re now into our sixth season with the ‘Drive Thru’ series,” says Shon Tomlin, FUEL TV’s VP of Programming and Development. “Each one has had so many twists and turns and with Andy Irons on board for the upcoming trip, this Australian edition is sure to be the most memorable one. It’s hard to imagine that we would ever get two world champions to go along on one trip – not to mention four of the most prolific surfers in the world. It’s pretty damn cool and is going to make for some amazing shows.”

The six-episode season of “Drive Thru: Australia” will begin airing November 18, 2009, at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT. Each episode will also re-air Thursday nights at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT in the SurfSpot programming block.
