Carlsbad, CA (March 11, 2009) — Ian Walsh’s 6th annual Menehune Mayhem Surf event will be held Saturday, March 28th at Maui’s Ho’okipa Beach Park. Walsh, an advocate for introducing and instilling a passion for surfing in Hawaii’s youth, created the free event with the help of O’Neill and Red Bull as a way giving back to the children and teens of Maui as well as showcasing what the surf culture and sport have to offer.
Surfers will be eligible to compete in the following categories: boys and girls ages 11 and under, boys ages 12-13, girls ages 12-14, boys ages 14-15, girls ages 15-17 and boys ages 16-17. Awards will be given at the event for highest GPA for a boy and girl, the Eric Diaz Memorial Award and the Steve Cooney Memorial Award in which all competitors are eligible to win. The event’s four person finals will determine the podium positions.
“I’m so excited to be able to host my contest again this year. Every year this event grows and with Red Bull and O’Neill really stepping up this year, the event should be better than ever. I’m so fortunate to have such great sponsors and event partners and all of the kids who come out and participate in the event this year will see why,” Walsh said regarding the event.
Entry forms can be picked up at Hi-Tech surf shops on Maui and mailed to 720 #5 Hana Hwy. Paia, HI 96779. The event is first come first serve and the divisions fill up quickly.
Ian Walsh would like to thank the following sponsors: O’Neill, Lost Surfboards, Boost Mobile, Red Bull Energy Drink, Da Kine and Vertra Sunscreen.
