Jet Ski Accident Roxy Pro

As reported on www.goldcoast.com.au:

A RUNAWAY jet-ski crashed into a recreational surfer at the Roxy Pro in a `one in a million’ freak accident, according to a Gold Coast boatie who helped pull the injured man from the surf.

The accident happened when one of the contest’s safety patrol officers lost control of his jet-ski and fell off after being hit by a wave at Duranbah yesterday.

The surfer, who is in his 40s and known only as Dave, was stand-up paddle boarding about 150m to 200m offshore when he was struck, breaking a leg.

NSW Maritime is probing the incident.

Currumbin father of three Bill Morrison was cruising behind the breakers in his Queensland Surf Charters vessel with skipper Steve Hewitt at 9.30am.

The pair were first on the scene to help the surfer and catch the riderless jet-ski.

“Steve and I were just cruising around watching the contest and the next thing we saw was the lifeguard fall off the back of the ski and the ski has taken off at 100 miles an hour,” said Mr Morrison.

“The next thing you know it is heading for a bloke on a stand-up paddle board … the ski was just going so fast and before he knew it, it just hit him at 12 o’clock. It was a freak accident … unbelievable. It was a ‘one in a million’ chance.”

File a lawsuit against the whole damn organization putting on the event, against the water patrol, against the jetski manufacturer and while you’re at it…go ahead and get a divorce. That way you can keep more of the funds you will win in court.

May this serve as a warning for all the kook Stand Up Paddle surfers who infest the already kook infested waters of LA, El Porto in particular! Tried to surf out there this Saturday and these F**kin idiot SUPers were everywhere! They were flinging their boards around like it was a big spin skate contest or some sh*t like that! I agree with above that I never wish harm upon any individual, but 9 times out of ten these dumb-ass SUP boarders are reading their water proof books, sending emails on their black berries, and taking shit*s while “cruise” on their hover crafts and sweep the sea in hopes of catching some seaman vermin! The water ain’t no circus kooks, go play in the bay!

Sweeper bla, bla,… How is the jet ski?

  • Negligent Says:

You can see in the picture the lanyard key is still in place. If the “safety officer” had been wearing the lanyard, this would never have happened. Negligent.

  • e Says:

    internet tough guys are gnarly!!!!!!!

  • Shootz Says:

Damned “SEA-MAGGOTS” (PWC) strike again. Another fine example that PWC and everyday surf-spots DO NOT MIX. Totally get the XXL Tow-In deal, and life saving, but for crying out loud, get the exhaust breathing Sea-Maggots out of the lineups once and for all (contest or no contest)…

  • Jesse Says:

It looks as though the ASP PWC operator wasn’t wearing his lanyard. This is completely negligent on the part of the operator. He is lucky that no one was killed. If the ASP doesn’t have Standard Operating Procedures requiring it’s PWC staff to wear their lanyards then they are also at fault.

Nice Steve! I agree and to bad it wasn’t.

  • pj49ers16 Says:

I say its negligent on both parties if I see a runaway ski comin my way fuck the board dude DIVE DIVE DIVE!!!

  • Aloha is a choice Says:

If it was california, alot more then one person would of been wounded. This will surley be cause for safety regulations to be inforced.Imagine a guy surfing and hiting him while sitting on his board, most like would of been killed. Keep alert guys!

  • poeticjustice Says:

I would never wish any harm to anyone either. However, when those kooks on sups paddle out I will now be wishing for a runaway jet ski.
California is not Hawaii riding a sup here is gay even if you are competent on the thing. Any decent shortboarder who cared to put some time in would exceed most guys ability in a few sessions. You know your sport sucks when longboards hate you.

  • SUPhater Says:

good one poetic justice. gotta agree, don’t like seeing anyone get hurt, but it’s an example for all you suppers out there. of course it would be a dude on one of those annoying things out in the lineup to get nailed by a runaway jetski. if that’s not enough proof that supping is lame then i don’t know what is. if the guy had half a brain he would’ve jumped off and swam deep when it was getting close. and though this happened in oz, and though there are reasons for them in places like hawaii and tahiti (where it serves a purpose for their native lifestyles) there is no reason for them in california, and the east coast especially.

  • youreafool Says:

what if he didnt see the ski until the last minute? that is reckless to dish out fault to the victim without thinking outside of your little box… i know you, youre the dude that huffs and puffs when someone drops in on you, but if you happen to stuff someone then you would create some convoluted reason to justify your drop-in. the world is bigger than your head buddy.

  • youreafool Says:

another fool… for all those that have been attacked by a shark, you should have punch it in the nose or poked it in the eye, then for sure you would get away and at least have a chance to survive… thats what SUPhater and pj49ers16 would have done. whats your native lifestye?? being a scumbag, irate mofo? get over yourselves… if you were in living in hawaii or tahiti, and couldnt outcompete SUPs for waves you would be singing the same negative tune… when SUP surf waves in hawaii and tahiti, do they also fish and spearfish at the same time?? not likely. selfish f***ing surfers… too many me me me peoples in this with entitlement issues… you have no more right to a wave than a SUP or a longboarder or another shortboarder or a sponger.

  • yobby Says:

get well soon SUP dude! but im glad thats one less in the water and i hope this is a tramatatataizing expeirence and you destroy that damned thing! SUPs are just a fad like painting shitty pictures on your shortboard in bright pink and green paint! As soon as Slater wins title 20 this will all go away!

  • Anonymous Says:

way to bury the story TransWorld… how much is Roxy paying you to take this off the frontpage?????

  • Anonymous Says:

    Jess

It may be a little early to be pointing fingers prior to the Marine Board inquiry delivering its verdict. The ASP has stringent guidelines for the operation of a PWC. Design standards in Australia also require the throttle on these types of vessels to return to the neutral position. The lanyard attachment is hardly infallible.
Lots of questions, not many answers.
P.S. All this talk of legal action prior the facts being determined is gayer than SUP boarders will ever be. Defamation is also an actionable.

  • j Says:

All you morons talking trash about paddle surfing need to do some research into the history of surfing. you would discover that it is the original form of the sport invented by Ancient Hawaiians. Aloha. Hope that braddah can heal up and get back in the water.

  • Ayana Says:

    Amen to that j!

  • itsalldead Says:

Holy crap!Sorry to hear someone got hurt. But was the dork SUP guy sleeping or what?Ha ha ha !!!

  • Weskus - Cape Town Says:

If you want to consider “the original form of the sport,” its going to take more than some intellectually-blond-couch-surfing-wombat quote. After all, did the “Ancient Hawaiians” have our modern technology in materials? That heap ‘o shit is completely new and has no ties to the ancient art. Don’t give me that crap. I wouldn’t be surprised if the PWC pilot aimed for his supper and faked the accident just for a laugh. Ha Haaaa! Give me more of this man!

  • Ski Courses Says:

Off-Piste skiing now matches on piste skiing in popularity

  • wowza Says:

Wow. Reading these posts makes me want to break my shortboard in half to prevent myself from ever having to associate myself with you halfwit morons again.
