Courtney Conlogue of Santa Ana, Kanoa Igarashi of Huntington Beach win 2 of the event’s 5 divisions.
The first sizable surf contest run at Upper Trestles in a decade scored fun waves, produced solid performances, provoked consternation from some recreational surfers and left the possibility of another event later this year.
The Western Surfing Association hosted 112 top-rated amateur surfers under 18 years old for a two-day WSA Prime contest, Saturday and Sunday.
There was a scuffle in the water late Friday, when competitors showed up in force to practice for the event. Saturday, there were a few harsh words from recreational surfers who arrived at one of America’s favorite recreational surfing beaches to find the main break had been reserved for a contest.
As it turned out, there were plenty of waves to go around and recreational surfers had a healthy portion of them. Coupled with that, not as many recreational surfers turned out, once word circulated that there was a contest.
