HIC Pipeline Pro Waiting Period Begins

One of the more confusing aspects of the Hawaiian competition series is the Monster Energy…er, the HIC Pipeline Pro. I think if you finish in the top 16 of the event you automatically are granted a berth into the Billabong Pipeline Masters. The well-deserving guys that got a “Surfer Peer Poll” vote get entry into the HIC Pipeline Pro didn’t have enough WQS points to get into the event but thanks to their peers, were not left out.

January 27-February 9, 2009

HONOLULU – January 26, 2009 – The holding period for the HIC Pipeline Pro commences tomorrow at Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu. This local, one-day event will see 60 of Hawaii’s top surfers turn out in an attempt to win one of eight highly coveted slots into December’s Pipeline Masters. The Pipeline Masters is the world’s most prestigious professional surfing competition and is the final event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series.

In all, there will be 16 trials spots open for the Pipeline Masters; eight will come from the HIC Pipeline Pro, six from a Surfer Peer Poll, one will be reserved for a Tahitian, and the final spot will go to a Triple Crown contender after the first two events of that series.

The results of the Surfer Peer Poll were announced today and the following surfers won berths:
Reef McIntosh
Kamalei Alexander
Danny Fuller
Marcus Hickman
Kalani Chapman
Jamie O’Brien

The HIC Pipeline Pro is the first of six men’s events sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals in Hawaii, for 2009. HIC was the original sponsor of this event, launching it back in 1990. It ran under HIC’s banner through 2001, and their return has been enthusiastically received.

Organizers will assess conditions each morning and will make a call by 7a.m. The status of the event will be posted at: www.asphawaii.org or call hotline: (808) 596-7878 (596-SURF).
