5 Epic Winter Trips

Epic Spot 5 of 5

With a warm Mediterranean climate, terrain similar to that of pre-development California, and perfect right-hand point breaks dotting the coast, Morocco is a true surfer’s paradise. While there are beachbreaks and the odd left scattered throughout, the real gems of Morocco are the right-handers. Beginning with the mystical and once secret Safi in the middle of the country and stretching south into the vast Sahara Desert (where there are rumors of Snapper-like points existing), Morocco welcomes the intrepid surf explorer. A wintertime destination, the best swells hit Morocco from November through February, when giant storm systems slam into Europe and send groomed swell down the coast.

Located in North Africa, Morocco gets the same swells that slam into Europe, but they arrive without the wind and weather.

Water Temp: Low 60s-Upper 50s on the coldest days
Consistency: Most consistent December-March.
Crowds: While Euro’s have been coming here for years and the local surf scene is growing, crowds aren’t nearly as bad as Hawaii or California.
Local Scene: Ancient and beautiful. Make sure to sample the delicious tangine dishes, shop at the souks (outdoor markets), and make a run the walled city of Marrakech.
Watch Out For: Sea urchins, petty theft, boulders lining the shore, and goats in trees (true story).
