HONOLULU — The U.S. Coast Guard and Honolulu Fire Rescue teams have suspended their search for a missing surfer on Oahu’s North Shore after it was determined that the surfer had safely returned to shore Friday night.

Beachgoers reported seeing a surfer go under water and not resurface at about 5:15 pm Friday.

Coast Guard officials searched that afternoon and evening with HFD officials suspending their search just before 7 p.m. on account of uncertain information.

It was determined this morning that the 16-year-old surfer had lost his board in the 10-12 foot waves at Kawela Bay’s “Stables” surf break.

Shortly after losing his board, the surfer returned to shore but did not report to his friends or officials that he was safe.
