CARCAVELOS, Portugal (Wednesday, October 22, 2008) – After six hours of patience, officials and surfers agreed to call the event off for the second day of the waiting period. Some small but inconsistent waves eventually started breaking at Carcavelos but not enough to get top seeds to paddle out.
The Estoril Coast Pro, an ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star event, is the final event of the 2008 ASP WQS European Series and the third to final major event of the year with crucial ratings’ points that will count for both regional and international ratings.
The forecast shows a new swell coming with the right direction from tonight and supposed to remain until Sunday, October 26, with some excellent surfing expected in the five to six foot (1.5 to 2 meter) range.
The ASP WQS European title race will heat up soon as current ratings’ leader and 2009 ASP World Tour qualifier Tim Boal (FRA) should be pulling out of the event due to a foot injury, leaving a good chance to former regional champion Michel Bourez (PYF) to clinch a second crown if he reaches the Quarterfinals of the Estoril Coast Pro. If Bourez fails to reach the Quarterfinals, Australian-Irish surfer Glenn Hall (IRE) will be on a mission to possibly secure his maiden ASP WQS European title if he wins in Portugal.
Another call will be made at 8 a.m. (GMT+1) tomorrow Thursday, October 23, and Round 2 is scheduled to commence at 8.30 AM featuring local hero and current ASP World Tour No. 31 Tiago Pires (Ericeira, PRT) in Heat 1.
