Championship and $25K Bonus Cash Still Anyone’s Game
San Clemente, Calif. – Oct. 17, 2008 – With the completion of two-thirds of the 2008 Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series, the Trifecta points race has reached a boiling point. The series concludes with the O’Neill Cold Water Classic at the famed Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz next Tuesday, Oct. 21 through Sunday, Oct. 26, where two new Trifecta champions will be named. Fans can track all of the action at www.catrifecta.com featuring the latest news, results and information about each of the three events, as well as photos, videos, surfer bios, ratings, product giveaways, and a LIVE webcast throughout the duration of the event.
Macy’s California Trifecta contender Kieran Horn.
Although Nate Yeomans (San Clemente, CA) grabbed the Trifecta lead after clinching his third consecutive Oakley Newport Beach Pro win last month, the door has been opened for fellow top points leaders as Yeomans will not be surfing in Santa Cruz. Inaugural Macy’s California Trifecta Champion, Asher Nolan (Neptune Beach, FL) 1800 pts, is on the hunt again and sits in the number two spot. Dillon Perillo (Malibu, CA) 1663 pts has skyrocketed to third after an impressive finish in Newport, followed closely by Santa Cruz’s own Kieran Horn 1650 pts.
Many see Horn as the favorite going into the event. A Santa Cruz local, Horn’s history at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic includes the coveted win in 2003, runner-up to Jordy Smith in 2007, as well as several other semis, quarters and finals appearances throughout the years.
With Joel Centeio (1650 pts), Patrick Gudauskas (1575 pts) and Ben Bourgeois (1500 pts) not competing at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic, the next group of guys on the hunt include Micah Byrne (Huntington Beach, CA) 1444 pts, Darrell Goodrum (San Diego, CA) 1425 pts and Shaun Ward (Huntington Beach) 1331 pts.
“As the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series has proven in the past, it’s still anyone’s game and especially for the surfers who are sitting in the top 10 in the Trifecta ratings after Newport,” said Sean Nielsen, ASG Director of Event Operations. “It always comes down to a heated battle at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic and we expect no different from the guys this year.”
Now in it’s fourth consecutive year, the ASP North America specialty series unites three prominent ASP WQS events held in California: the 6.0 Lowers Pro at Lower Trestles, San Clemente, April 29-May 3; Oakley Newport Pro at 56th Street, Newport Beach, Sept 16-21; and O’Neill Cold Water Classic at Steamer Lane, Santa Cruz, Oct. 21-26. For the second consecutive year, the Oakley Pro Junior Division of the Trifecta will also get in on the action with a $10,000 bonus purse, up from $5,000 last year, for the top three overall points winners from the three event series.
After stops one and two, the top four pro junior surfers on the Trifecta are: Sebastian Zietz (HAW) 778 pts, Dillon Perillo (Malibu, CA) 725 pts, Jason Harris (Huntington Beach, CA) 630 pts and Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA) 583 pts. Trevor Saunders (San Clemente, CA) 565 pts, Blake Jones (Melbourne Beach, FL) and Andrew Doheny (Newport Beach, CA), each with 555 pts, and Travis Beckmann (Vero Beach, FL) 525 pts aren’t far behind.
The Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series was formed in 2005 to strengthen surfing in America and has added additional cash and prize incentives each year since its inception. The Trifecta series provides surfers with an opportunity to earn crucial points towards the ASP WQS and pro junior end-of-year rankings, which factors into advancement to the coveted ASP World Tour and ASP World Junior Championships. Additionally, the top three overall points-winners will receive bonus cash – $15,000 for the WQS and $10,000 for the Oakley Pro Junior.
