The California Surf Museum is proud to be part of the “Summer of Sports” at the San Diego County Fair this year. The fair runs from June 14th – July 6th. During this time CSM will unveil its latest exhibit “San Diego Surfs,” which includes a variety of significant area surfboards from past to present, photos and stories.
The Fair has designated their opening day, Saturday, June 14, as “Surf Day,” and CSM has been invited host some special presentations in the theme exhibit hall.
Opening day schedule includes:
10 a.m. – 6 p.m.: Talented boardmaker Jim Phillips shaping live in the Wyland Center.
Noon – 1 p.m.: CSM ambassadors will present an overview of surfing throughout the county, as seen through the eyes of local legends Linda Benson, Tom Keck, LJ Richards, Doug Tico, and Woody Ekstrom. These individuals, and others stars of the book Surfing In San Diego, will be on hand to share stories of the past. This will be a great opportunity to buy a book and get it autographed.
1 p.m. – 2 p.m.: Local film historian Ira Opper will share an hour’s worth of rare video footage of San Diego’s surfing past.
2 p.m. – 3 p.m.: Surf Shot Magazine will present a slide show, with contributions from photographers Jon Steele and Don Balch.
Bring the family and soak up a bit of San Diego’s colorful surfing history.
