#2: “The Pure Joy of Surfing”
Triptych Surfboard Mural by Drew Brophy
Drew’s mural depicting the joy of surfing painted on three Lost Surfboards. Remember the days spent at the beach with friends riding waves until your arms could paddle no more? Your nose pink form sunburn, and isn’t it funny how the waves always seem bigger in your memory? Remember old men talking about how it used to be, no crowds, and secret, epic surf spots that are no more. Maybe now you have grown to one of the older surfers who remembers. I want my children to remember, and it’s our job to save our beaches, save our surf breaks, and most of all, teach our children the pure joy of riding waves, surfing. Surfboards provided by Matt Biolas of Lost Surfboards.
Value: $3,000

#3: Skip Frye Quiver
Long Board, Fish, Gun
Skip Frye Quiver: 7’6″ Swallowtail; 9’6″ ClassiSquaretail; 11′ Eagle “It’s hard for me to articulate a three-board quiver as my personal version is running at 40 boards. Still, this quiver is pretty functional for a mature surfer who doesn’t surf as much as he used to, but knows what he wants and what he’s doing. First, there’s the 7’6″ Swallowtail. While kids might consider this a longboard, this is my most requested and popular shortboard. Since flex is a big part of performance, I use a Clark green blank, unlike the Classic weight I prefer in most of my other boards. It’s a three-fin. Next is the 9’6″ Classic Squaretail. While it has a wide nose, it’s pointed; my boards are built for speed and flow, not necessarily for nose riding. This board represents my evolution of a standard longboard. Again, it’s flow. Finally, there’s the 11′ Eagle. This template came out of the Skip Frye Model from Gordon and Smith from the 60′s. It’s an all-around board, well-scaled and with a nice turning curve. I consider a board of this length an important part of any quiver. A few years back, I really got turned on to the glide and speed of boards in this length range.”
