2007 Through The Eyes Of Transworld SURF

January:
In late January, ASR San Diego roared into town, bringing together the entire action sports world in an attempt to get a bunch of work done. Our job is to go there, check out some new products, go to raging parties armed with nothing more than a corpo card, and check out lots of scantily dressed girls. After checking out the photo gallery, you’ll agree: Mission accomplished.

The first of many “Kelly Slater Spotted With (Insert Hot Celebrity Coming Out Of A Relationship’s Name Here)” article appears on gossip sites…and Transworld SURF. The Eight Time World Champ kicked off 2007 with none other than Cameron Diaz and Kelly.

South African sensation Jordy Smith kick started his monstrous 2007 with a win in the highly prestigious Billabong ASP World Junior Championships and added his name to the likes of Joel Parkinson and Andy Irons to the winners trophy. Later in the year, the 2008 WCT Rookie signed the largest rookie deal in history, rumored to be in the $2 million range.

February
In early February, Jamie O’Brien charged his way to his second win at the Monster Energy Pro at Pipeline. Jamie’s victory was notable not only because it was held in monstrous surf (something the Pipe Masters hasn’t had in several years), but because the top finishing local surfers got an invitation to the Billabong 2007 Pipeline Masters which was just held. Check out the photos and story here

Volcom buys the “Pipe House.” Says Volcom’s Clint Moncata, “From the ghettos of V-land to the beachfront at Pipe!” Trust us, the “new” Volcom house is the epicenter of the entire North Shore. Click here for more.

March
Kelly Slater pops up again on celebrity gossip Web sites, this time when photogs spot him with an Aussie model who happens to have a boyfriend: “Australian Pinup Model Denies Fling With Kelly Slater”

Mick Fanning begins his 2007 WCT Championship winning rampage with a win at his homebreak, Snapper Rocks. His quarterfinal heat against tour rookie Josh Kerr was one of the highest scoring heats ever. Bede Durbidge, who recently won the Triple Crown, placed second. Click here for photos and article.

April
The Ron Jon Easter Surf Festival and …Lost Pro Junior in Cocoa Beach was simply amazing! While the surf was on the small side, the Model Search by day and parties by night more than made up for it! Go to the Photo Gallery and our most viewed slideshow of the year Model Search at the event.

The end of April saw a mega sized south swell slam Teahupo’o just in time for the final day of the Billabong Pro Tahiti trials. Local Manoa Drollet won with Australia’s Anthony Walsh taking second. Go to the Photo Gallery

May
Transworld SURF posted up in Tahiti for nearly three weeks in May for the Billabong Pro Tahiti. While the majority of the event was run in small sur the swell kicked in for the final day and Damien Hobgood took the win. Check the Final Day Photo Gallery and the Faces of the Billabong Pro Tahiti photo gallery.

The tight-knit surf community of La Jolla, CA. was devastated by the beating that led to the death of 24-year old Emery Kauanui in late May. Kauanui had a run in at a local bar with members of the “Bird Rock Bandits” and was beaten to death in front of his home after they followed him home. Emery’s acquaintances Eric House, 20, Orlando Osuna, 22, Matthew Yanke, and so-called ringleader Seth Cravens, 21, were arrested shortly after he died. Read Article

The Rip Curl Search Chile scores some of the heaviest waves of the 2007 WCT season at “El Gringo” in Arica, Chile. Andy Irons gets his first–and only–victory of the season. Go to the Photo Gallery.

One of the best trips I’ve ever had came out in the June issue of Transworld SURF–a boat trip to Mainland Mexico aboard the Royal Pelagic. We scored super waves all up and down the Oaxacan coastline and had the sickest boat ever to call home. Check the photos here

July
The world’s biggest surf contest and we’re the media sponsor! While the waves are never really that great, the US Open is the most highly attended surf contest in the world, so do the math: Hundreds of thousands of people in SoCal in the middle of the summer=thousands of really hot girls in tiny bikinis, oh, and we had a Model Search booth set up. Somewhere in there is a surf contest won by CJ Hobgood as well. It’s all here at the US Open Supersite!

The ‘Bra Boys a “surf gang” out of Maroubra, Australia–which is basically a ghetto–lay claim to a wave named “Ours.” While spongers had been riding there previously, the ‘Bra Boys kicked them out and took control of the heaving beast of a wave. The takeover also coincided with the premier of the documentary style movie entitled ‘Bra Boys. Read an article about them kicking out spongers and see some crazy Ours clips here.

August
Bali goes bonkers! It seems like the entire surf world flocked to Bali and surrounding islands this past summer. Transworld joined the party (even though we’ve covered Bali for years) and an army of photogs shot some of the worlds best in conditions ideal for heavy shredding. Check out the Bali Sessions and Team Billabong In Indo slideshows.

Vacation Time! Well, it’s not really a vacation if you’re still posting stuff, but either way, Kandui Resort in the Mentawais was home sweet home to Online Editor Justin Coté for two weeks in late August. The Kandui Chronicles kept all my friends jealous, and made it easy for fellow guests to show their friends what they were getting up to. Trust me, you want to go there!

September
ESA Championships At Cape Hatteras. Transworld SURF heads East to beautiful Cape Hatteras, North Carolina for the Easterns. Most of us had never been there before and we were blown away by the level of ripping the “Right Coast” is holding. Those kids rip! Anyway, we had a carnage-filled game of dodgeball where grown men threw balls at young children. I even managed to peg an eight-year-old girl in the face. Not a proud moment but she was okay and we became buddies. Check out the ESA mini site with all the results and photos here and the freesurf shots here

Kelly Slater Wins The Boost Mobile Pro! Flashbacks of In Black And White as Kelly wins his first WCT of the year and ties Tom Curren’s career victory mark at 33. Check the huge slideshow here

Santa Ana winds fueled wildfires that ravaged Southern California. While the fires burned out of control, surfers enjoyed (with some guilt) some of the best surf we’d seen in ages. Check out the California On Fire slideshow, Photos From The Front Lines and enjoy the etnies GvR Of Surf where Oceanside enjoyed some of the best surf seen in years.

The Kelly Watch gets weird. In Israel, Kelly is reported to be detained after scuffling with photographers who spot him leaving a hotel with Israeli supermodel Bar Rafaeli. The lame part is that Kelly was there to support the “Surfing For Peace” movement but his “scuffle” overshadowed the good deeds done by him and Makua Rothman, who also made the trip.

Mick Fanning Wins The World Title! After dominating the WCT all year, Australia’s Mick Fanning sealed his maiden championship–and Australia’s first since 1999–at the Hang Loose Pro in Brazil. Transworld SURF congratulates Mick on his achievement! Click here for the article and here for the Mick Fanning photo gallery.

From out of nowhere (actually it was a storm in Antarctica) the biggest swell to hit Teahupo’o in years slams into the treacherous break. Ian Walsh gets the cover of TWS, Garrett and Raimana “share” a wave, and Jamie Sterling gets a “dream wave.” We got the photos up the next day and got a sick Raimana Interview w/ photos.

Bede Durbidge wins 2007 The Triple Crown and Billabong Pipeline Masters. In one sweet day for the relatively unknown Aussie, he pulls in the biggest payday ever in the sport of surfing. While the waves for surfing’s most hallowed event were far from stellar (think windy, waist-high rights) Bede Durbidge proved nice guys don’t always finish last. Check out the surf photo gallery and Backstage Pass To The North Shore phs rip! Anyway, we had a carnage-filled game of dodgeball where grown men threw balls at young children.
