Tory Barron Interview

[IMAGE 1]Big Baby Labs: What are your plans for this summer?

Tory Barron: Get some work done. Do a couple of WQS contests to get some points behind me. Do some photo trips, come up for all the boys, get my job done, and do what I need to do the best that I can.

Who do you look up to as far as surfing goes?

I look up to a lot of different people. Guys that have their own style and guys who mix it up. I look up to Tom Curren, who is cruise, mellow. Gerry Lopez, guys like that. Guys that kept it real, like James Labrador, Noah Johnson, Jun Jo.

What has growing up on the North Shore taught you about your surfing and other people’s surfing on the big wave aspect, like charging Backdoor like you do every winter?

Growing up on the North Shore has been an advantage to me in my surfing. Everybody in the world goes over there to surf where I was raised. Laying down a big turn, putting your rail out, is an everyday thing to me. Going out, shooting off the bottom on an eight foot wave, coming off the top, and laying down a carve, that’s how I do it. That’s just being raised up on the North Shore with Kelly Slater, Rob, Sunny Garcia, and everybody at the spots that I’m surfing. It comes naturally to put it on the rail like I do. It’s all about your own style once you have your move down. Growing up on the North Shore had advantages not only for me, but for my friends as well. I have to take it serious, focus and try to make this my career. Like I said, put a hundred percent into what I do, and keep at it.

[IMAGE 2]Right on dog. Let’s flip out to a different subject, so people out there know what you are into. What kind of music are you into?

I’m into a lot of local music now, like culture music. When you travel you hear different types of music. Just try not to single out all of them. You have all different kinds, different beats, different rhythms, different emotions. You travel around the world and you get different aspects of life.

What I like to listen is roots music, like reggae. It’s super mellow. I also like my local music, Hawaiian. I really like hip hop and jazz music, like Toni Braxton, Erica Badu, Lauren Hill, all those female singers are good.

Because they have content. They mean something you know. Just listen to what they are singing about, and their beats are insane. That’s what I like to listen to. I like to listen to jazz music, like Al Green. I like mellow music, because I think that I’m a pretty mellow guy.

Sometimes, when you don’t get too out of control. On a better note, do you want to give any shout outs to anybody out there? I know that you have a lot of friends and a lot of people who look after you. A lot of people have your back. Lets get this going on.

I’d like to give a shout out to all my sponsors. All the boys: Steve Clark at Billabong, Chris Hefner. I love Osiris, Brian House, he’s a cool brother. Terrence McNulty at Oakley. That’s what I’m all about is being real, the realest crew, that’s my crew. I consider myself blessed being raised on the North Shore, getting to meet the people that I met, the boys that I grew up with. I’d like to give a shout out to all the boys that I grew up with, the realest crew: M.J., Mikala Jones-dog, Rory Parker, Peter Labs.

What have you learned as far as traveling around the world and going to all these different cultures? What is the main thing that you’ve learned comparing our culture to other cultures that you’ve been to?

When I travel, I’m very open to a lot of people. I can express freely how I am. I love to spread the aloha. As long as they have respect for me while I’m there. If someone goes just a little bit for me, I’m down to go the whole way. The places that I’ve been to, and the people that I’ve met, I’ve been blown away. I’m very stoked. I just have to take it serious, concentrate, and stay focused. Hopefully I can see them every year. Plan some trips, if I want to go back and see the guys that I met. It’s rad being able to traveel at such a young age.

Rad Tory. It was nice talking to you man. Peace. One love.

One love, peace, serve God only, keep it real, do your best, keep your head up.
