Billabong Pro Trestles 2000 – Day One

Day one (Tuesday) of competition of the Billabong Pro at Trestles was low on excitement thanks to Mother Nature. Thewaves, chest high at best, were throwing competitors extra long lulls and created a contest relying a little more on strategy(nothing new for Trestles) than skill. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t that bad, but for a World Championship Tour event, thingscould definitely be better.

[IMAGE 1] As for the scene itself, Billabong is going all out to make sure everything goes right and they’re doing a damn goodjob. It’s kinda nice not to have all the sideshows and throngs of people crowding the scene-thanks guys. Competitorskilling it included heat winners Cory Lopez who came back with an 8.5 when he needed it, Pat O’Connell, Sunny Garcia, TajBurrow, Joel Parkinson, Andy Irons, Rob Machado, and Shane Beschen with the high heat score of the day. Hold it, everybody onthe CT kills it, however those guys were on top of their game. 9.5 was the high score of the day and it went to Mr. JakePaterson who also won his heat.

[IMAGE 2]Mr. Six-time world champ Kelly Slater was ripping, but was given a shitball for waves in his heat. With seconds left heneeded a score in the sixes but only earned a 4.9. He now has to face Shane Dorian in Round Two-that’ll be heavy. Occy decided to go try the Flowrider in San Diego yesterday only to get bounced and sprain his bloody ankle. Looks likehe’s done for the contest.

The following is an interview with Jake Paterson. Currently seventh, Jake is also one of head representatives for thenewly formed surfers union. See you tomorrow. -AC
