“Only the strong survive” is the perfect quote to describe the path to becoming a professional athlete. It’s no easy task to achieve a career in any professional sport. It takes a great deal of natural ability, a strong desire to win, and a lot of luck along the way.
Few young athletes actually get the chance to mature to their potential¿life seems to really take its toll at an early age. I can’t remember how many times I have seen the supposed “cream of the crop” fall victim to life’s little demons. It’s a sad thing to watch someone with so much talent not achieve what seems to be right in front of them. It just goes to show that succeeing just based on your physical ability in the water, but also your mental ability out of the water.
Every so often, though, a surfer comes along who seems to stand tall amongst the trials of life as well as the talent of his peers. Tom Curren, Mark Occhilupo, Sunny Garcia, Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, and Kalani Robb are just some who’ve done this in the past and present. Hard acts to follow, but who said it can’t happen? Only time will tell.
One of the South Bay’s most promising hopefuls is Alex Gray. Born and raised in Palos Verdes, California, Alex has already started turning heads at only age thirteen.¿Greg Browning
